Wahoo has announced that it has acquired the pedal brand Speedplay. This is Wahoo’s second large acquisition in recent times, following its purchase of indoor training app The Sufferfest earlier in the year.

Speedplay has focussed solely on road, 'cross, gravel and mountain bike pedals up to this point. However, with this acquisition, we reckon it’s likely that a power meter-equipped pedal will follow.

This wouldn’t be the first go at creating a power meter pedal based around Speedplay’s pedals — both MetriGear (which went on to become Vector following its purchase by Garmin) and the (ill-fated) Brim Brothers have both had a shot.

To be clear, there’s no actual announcement about a new power meter pedal.

However, this news comes after the relaunch of PowerTap — following its acquisition by SRAM in April — and the release of SRM’s power meter mountain bike pedals, suggesting there’s a real appetite in the market for such a product.

In the meantime, speaking to BikeRadar, Wahoo said that its initial focus will be "on expanding the availability of Speedplay pedals in both IBDs, online retailers, and directly through Wahoo and Speedplay's websites".
