Alessandro Petacchi won his third Giro stage of 2007, beating Gabriele Balducci and Robbie McEwen at
PIC: Alessandro Petacchi (Team Milram) The Italians are making it hard for any outsiders to claim victory once again, as Milram's Alessandro Petacchi pipped Gabriele Balducci (Acqua & Sapone-Caff Mokambo) and Robbie McEwen (Predictor-Lotto) to claim his third victory in Stage 11 of the 2007 Giro d'Italia. In a bizarre ending to a fairly uneventful stage, race leader Andrea Noe (Liquigas) cruised across the finish line in 40th place on his rear-end, along with several others who "fell" victim on the wet pavement in Pinerolo. The surreal finish began when Tinkoff Credit System's Nikolai Trussov lost his bike on the finish line; fortunately for Noe and his Liquigas team, the leader's maglia rosa remains on Noe's shoulders for Stage 12, as he holds a 1:08 lead over Marzio Bruseghin (Lampre-Fondital) and an additional seven seconds over David Arroyo (Caisse d'Epargne). "I arrived, sliding across the line," Noe said. "Unfortunately the sprinters braked on the line but it remains a mystery why. Tomorrow we will see. It will be a hard day for [Danilo] Di Luca but also for everyone else," he added. A 142-kilometer solo breakaway by Mickal Buffaz (Cofidis) was aborbed by a pack of restless sprinters just 11km from the finish. As has been typical, another Tinkoff rider, Mikhail Ignatiev, went for reckless and futile glory following a right hand u-turn with 3,800 meters until the finish. Petacchi's Milram Train reeled in the Russion Olympic champion with less than 3km to go. Others smelling finish-line blood at this point were 2007 Giro stage winners McEwen and Danilo Napolitano (Lampre-Fondital). Crdit Agricole's Laszlo Bodrogi launched New Zealander teammate Julian Dean with 600 meters remaining. With 250 meters left, McEwen and Napolitano fought for Petacchi's wheel in the final left-hand bend. Petacchi shot off to the left out of the curve while McEwen kept to the right. Balducci choose the middle, but lost the bet and ended with third place behind the Italian and Australian. "I think today was dangerous but my companions did well," Petacchi said. "Maybe they went from too far out. I lost a little bit of speed but I was able to make a great remount." Today was Petacchi's 22nd Giro stage win. "I was afraid with the water and I did not want another crash with my knee," Petacchi added. "(Brett) Lancaster departed at 600 metres and did a great work. I was happy with his work because I was really scared over the wet pavement." The action behind the lead trio saw fourth-place finisher Thor Hushovd and Napolitano (fifth) go down when Trussov's fall took down world champion Paolo Bettini (Quickstep-Innergetic), Benot Joachim (Astana) and Alexandre Pichot (Bouygues Telecom). Crashes, mountains and the Tour de France loom large for many departing the Giro early, including American George Hincapie (Discovery Channel). Thursday's 163km 12th stage between Scalenghe and Briancon in France plays a huge factor. Hincapie decided preparation for the upcoming Dauphin Libr around his European home base of Girona, Spain was best. "He's at 100 percent," said Discovery spokesman PJ Rabice, "but George doesn't want to overdo it in Italy, as his big goal is to be ready to go for the Tour de France. To continue onto Milan would have likely been too much given that he has only raced the Tours of California and Georgia so far this year. Looking at the upcoming terrain and the intensity in the peloton these days, 10 days here turned out to be just right and was very good training for him as he prepares for the Tour." Petacchi is uncertain whether he will look for more victories in Italy, or just dropout to focus on the Tour de France as well. "I still am not sure if I will go on from here," the 33-year-old said. "I want to do a good Tour [de France], so I don't know. I will enjoy this victory now and then tonight I will talk to [my director Gianluigi] Stanga. I will think about it." The Stage 11 crash victims included GC contenders Yaroslav Popovych (Discovery Channel), third overall in 2003, who looks doubtful to start Stage 12. Astana's two-time Giro d'Italia champion Paolo Savoldelli also went down, but was unhurt, while Euskaltel-Euskadi's Aitor Hernandez fractured a collarbone, rendering his return to Giro's Stage 12 impossible.
