Before ratchets and the Boa lacing system, three Velcro straps (as opposed to two) were once the mark of a high-end shoe. However, the Radial now looks dated without some mechanical foot fixing system.
Lack of a buckle keeps the weight right down though, and the straps can be hauled tight, albeit without the progressive accuracy of a ratchet or Boa dial. The carbon soles are properly race stiff and a pleasure to stamp on.
The fit is on the narrow side, with little arch support but good heel retention, and the shoes stayed comfortable over a long ride, with no hotspots making themselves known. The Radial is also offered in black.
