German bicycle behemoth Cube is better known for banging out bikes than kit, but the AM Pro shoes show it's not just in there for a punt.
It’s a big shoe inside and out, definitely suiting those with a larger volume foot. Those with smaller feet may find the Boa-like dial can’t pull in enough to get a super snug fit. If you can, it’s a decent system that posed no problems regardless of how muddy it got.
The chunky sole looks like it would be great on sloppy pushes, but the lugs aren’t aggressive enough, and I didn’t find the Vibram sole great on slippy rocks or roots.
Stiffness wise the shoe is mid-pack — while this aids walking, on the bike power transfer isn’t spectacular. With such a thick sole, they also feel a little wooden when riding on platformed pedals.
The cleat channel comes fairly far back, and has a decent range of adjustment, so I was able to locate the cleat where I wanted — it’s also unhindered by the tread, so I had no pedal compatibility issues.
The upper is fairly thick, welcome in colder months, although the mesh above the toes is a touch thinner. There’s reasonable, if not outstanding levels of protection around the shoe.
