This Pedro's kit looks great sitting in the custom foam indents of its tough plastic case, but in use it’s a little limited.
The 22 pieces include a massive steel pedal spanner that doubles as a handle for the cassette and bottom bracket tools, and an equally monumental cog wrench. This is a variation on the usual chain whip, and has pins that secure in the gaps of the smallest 11T cog of 10-speed or the second, 12T cog of 11-speed cassettes. It works, but is neither an advantage nor a disadvantage.
Seven long, ball-ended Allen keys cover everything (1.5mm to 8mm), and a three-pronged Torx includes common T10 and T25 options along with T30. The two screwdrivers and a pair of tyre levers are fine – they’re common in toolkits, despite being better bought as specific, single items – but a chain breaker that’s multitool – rather than workshop-sized – and a big yellow cleaning brush feel like wasted opportunities.
The Apprentice kit does include a useful pair of wire cutters, though the quality of their materials is a little disappointing given the price.
Despite the 22-piece Apprentice Tool Kit offering more tools than Superstar’s excellent 16-piece Proline one, it feels like less... and it is. That's because, if you add up like Superstar (all sizes of Allen keys as one tool, for instance), the Pedro's toolbox is only 14 pieces.
