Purple Extreme gathers accolades wherever it’s tested, and with good reason. It was originally developed for offshore oil rigs to run chains in salt water, so there’s little that you – on your puny bike – can do to challenge its performance, and it won’t wash off with the first snowstorm of winter. It penetrates the chain quickly, ensures smooth running and is long lasting.
It’s a dry lube, so you must thoroughly clean your chain before applying a base layer. Allow this to dry before applying another. That will keep you going – with a quick hose-down and extra squirt after especially dirty rides – for longer than anything else.
At £9.95 for a 120ml bottle, Purple Extreme looks expensive compared with the wet lubes on test, but a little goes a long way so you’ll need to use much less.
