Shimano’s Ultegra 6700 wheel isn’t new but it was ahead of its time when it appeared and it’s still a smooth-rolling bargain and a benchmark at this price – especially if you know how to work cone spanners yourself.
The rims are tubeless ready (valves are supplied) with separate raised reinforcements for each of the 16 front and 20 rear double-butted straight-pull spokes. The resulting high spoke tension means tight cornering and acceleration feel yet keeps them some of the lightest wheels around.
The adjustable cup and cone bearings last for years if you learn how to look after them too, leaving slow freehub pickup as our only grumble.
