The TX is the new version of Novatec’s super-reliable TRAM 700 wheelset, which we’ve run extensively for a couple of years on three different bikes with no issues.
The rims are disc-brake-only tough aluminium jobs with a smooth sleeved joint, and 32 Sapim Laser stainless double-butted spokes are eyeleted to each rim using Sapim nipples and a secure thread compound.
The hubs use oversized axles, high-quality sealed bearings and a choice of lightweight steel or aluminium cassette bodies; with the aluminium body our test wheels weighed in at 950g front, 1,115g rear plus the quick-release axles at 45g apiece.
The spoke build is three-cross and the disc brake side of the hub uses a larger flange for extra strength. If they’re as reliable as the last pair of Novatec 29ers we tested – and so far they appear to be just as strong but slightly lighter – these come highly recommended.
If you need spares, all parts will be available at a good bike shop. From later this year the front hubs will have interchangeable parts to suit either quick-release or 9/15mm through-axles.
