This is a dual-sided design, with an SPD compatible cleat on one side and flat platform on the other. This can be tempting to ‘clipped in’ newbies as you can swap between the two during a ride, but in our experience it leads to more indecision and takes your mind off getting on and riding. Given that it’s more technical terrain these moments take place on, your focus is best placed on the trail not your toes.
This pedal is best used when you need to swap between every day and cleated shoes on the same bike, and for that it works admirably for very little outlay. It hangs cleat side down, so there’s no discomfort from lumps underfoot when you’re working the flats.
But it only takes a little practice to learn to flip the platform with your toe to deliver the cleats when you need them. Featuring the same positive engagement and release that will be familiar to SPD users, this pedal is easy to use and makes a good cost-effective choice for your town or commuting bike.
