German manufacturers NC17 are better known for their Mtb parts and accessories, but this swept riser, a bar beloved of continental tourists and trekkers, is a new addition to the range.
They're wide at 630mm, with a generous 16-degree rise and 32-degree sweep. NC17 claim that this sweep is optimal for straight wrists, but it was a little too much for me with my wide shoulders. Other than that, the position is very comfortable. The large rise sits you up, and the width makes for steady steering.
Obviously you're not going to be very aerodynamic in this upright position, and more weight is transferred to the saddle - make sure you've got one you really get on with. You don't get multiple hand positions as you would with drops (swept risers look rather silly with bar ends), but the position they do give you is something quite different to drops, and worth a try if you're touring for the view rather than clocking up the miles.
