Basic but effective as part of your braking system

Cantilever brakes have largely become outmoded by disc brakes on mountain bikes but they are still fitted to the greater proportion of touring and cyclo-cross bikes.

Prior to adjustment we recommend greasing the mating parts because the metal is quite soft and the allen head bolts can round off if you're not careful. The spring adjuster grub screw on the arms is a bit crude and stopping power can be improved by fitting better brake blocks - Aztec's Control brake blocks work well and cost £10 for four.
