Our review
Lives up to its promise of lightweight protection from the elements without compromising go-faster comfort

Pros:

Fit; unrestricted movement; breathable comfort

Cons:

Longer pocket zip pull would be an improvement

The Velocio Ultralight Trail Hooded Jacket is designed for lightweight packable performance, with an emphasis on unrestricted mobility and high breathability.

At £140, it's aimed at riders who want to move fast and stay light – and are prepared to pay for the comfort.

The fit is good and it breathes well, making it an attractive option as one of the best mountain bike jackets.

This jacket is made using Pertex Quantum Air fabric, which weighs in at only 50gsm (127g for the jacket overall), but boasts water-resistant, windproof and breathable performance for high-intensity riding.

It also features a good degree of stretch. This, combined with a pre-shaped, articulated cut, sets it up for maximum movement with a barely-there feel – even on technical rides.

The jacket features an elastic hood that fits over a helmet, a zippered stow pocket on the back and an internal laser-cut, bonded zip pocket with a media port.

A two-way zipper allows for optimum adjustability, enhancing convenience and comfort on the fly.

The first thing to note about this jacket is the fit. It's slim but not tight, extends low at the back with a gripper and elastic for a secure hold, and the shaped sleeves feel almost personally tailored.

The stretchy Pertex fabric is not only light, it feels comfortable against the skin, making it ideal to wear over short-sleeve MTB jerseys on warmer days.

Conversely, the highly windproof protection adds more warmth than you might expect as the day cools.

Usually, a windproof or water-resistant jacket goes on when you need it and packs away when you don’t. However, the immaculate fit and breathable comfort of this style meant that after pulling it on for cool autumn starts, I often forgot I was wearing it.

That versatility is helped by the inclusion of a two-way zip – this is a favourite feature because it allows for venting without having to stop and remove the jacket.

I rode a mix of swift cross-country trails and techy woodland sections and this jacket was not found wanting on either.

It copes fine when you’re moving fast and doesn’t feel uncomfortably sweaty, while remaining hardly perceptible when moving around on the bike.

The hood flips easily over a mountain bike helmet for sudden showers, although on a consistently windy day I preferred it worn underneath, where it was equally comfortable.

The jacket packs easily into its rear pocket, but my only gripe was I'd have liked a longer zip pull to make the unpacking process easier when wearing winter gloves.

This isn’t the cheapest jacket, but it does deliver on its promise of lightweight weather protection without compromising performance.

How does the Velocio Ultralight Trail Hooded Jacket compare to the Rapha Men’s Explore Lightweight Jacket?

Both these jackets are designed as packable extra layers and are around the same price, so it's a difficult choice.

I'd say if your needs are pure cycling, go with the Velocio Ultralight because the cut is better dialled and it feels a touch more sturdy.

If you need something that also works around town, the Rapha Explore is your stylish friend.

How we tested | Windproof jackets

Russell Burton tested five of the latest windshell jackets, trying to find the perfect balance of breathability, warmth and waterproofing – as well as assessing how small they pack down.

He put the jackets through their paces in a wide range of weather conditions, to help you decide which one is most worthy of your cash.
