The best way to stay warm on the bike is normally by wearing many thin layers. However, that doesn’t work when many equals five or more – gathering sweat and then hanging onto it as temperatures rise and fall with exertion.
So, we’ve turned to garments like the Scorch fleece from Berghaus when the temperatures drop. Thick Polartec Thermal Pro pile traps serious amounts of air and is an excellent insulator; it’s so good that we’ve been super-cosy with just a thin base and waterproof shell.
Features are minimal – high collar, full-length zip, a brace of pockets – but that’s all you need from a mid layer and the cut is suitably trim. It offers excellent performance and a pricetag that becomes more reasonable when you consider it’s taking the place of two or more other layers.
