The Nexion, as used by pro teams Agritubel and Ag2R, features 25 vents, an in-moulded hard shell (it’s part of the foam core, not glued to the outside) and a detachable peak, and conforms to the European CE and the tougher US CSPC standard.
The ‘Compactfix’ retention system is a simple twin ratchet which is easy to adjust to get a good, snug fit. About the only issue we had was interference with sunglass arms. The pads are antibacterially treated and are all attached by one web, complete with an insect mesh. The Nexion is light enough not to be noticed – 310g in the M-L size (53-61cm) – and has a lower profile than some lids.
It’s more substantial than most pro level models but the venting is more than adequate to keep your head cool even on long days in the saddle. Longer vents on the front channel air in while the rest of the openings act more as exhaust ports. The design certainly inspires confidence – Spiuk has concentrated on making something more substantial than just a web to keep some vents together.
This helmet from the Basque country has been around since 2005 and while the design is showing its age a little, overall it's still one of the best road lids we’ve tried. Though we can’t vouch for its crash protection, it meets the right standards. It’s available in 14 colours.
