Specialized's new top-line 2D lid is super lightweight, our medium model hitting the scales at a piffling 203g. To put that in perspective, it's about 25 per cent lighter than something like Giro's high-end Atmos and, although Limar is making the same claim for its Pro 104 model, Specialized reckon it's the lightest helmet in the world.

A Kevlar skeleton provides the framework for a dual-density foam body - high density around the sides to withstand impact, lower density elsewhere to save weight. Grams are also shaved off through the use of Specialized's new 4X DryLite straps which are way softer than usual on your neck.

In use, you certainly notice that this helmet is ultra-light; it makes a surprising amount of difference to comfort. The well placed vents do a fine job of channelling air in while you get plenty of padding, including one section that goes right across your forehead to stop sweat running down into your eyes.

The retention system is easy to use if a little basic; there's plenty of adjustment for cradle circumference but you can't control how far it reaches down the back of your head. That said, no one we tried it on had a problem with fit. In fact, all round comfort is superb.

You get an easily removable peak and, obviously, it conforms to all the usual safety standards. Our model is in Team Lampré-Fondital livery but several other colour options are available.
Stated weight for the Small size (presumably without the peak) is 185g. Our Large test helmet weighed a fair bit more - 260g (240g without the peak) but that still makes it one of the lightest around.
