These high quality German-made panniers (£105) are relatively small and light – 20L, 1.72kg – but their rolltop design is seriously waterproof. Nothing gets through these – not even a hose. Roll them tightly enough and you can ford rivers.
Internally you get a zipped mesh inner pocket. The backing plate isn’t that rigid, which accounts for the weight, and fitting adjustability is lacking, but they’re quick to get on and off and have the option of an external pocket.
If you don’t want to carry everything in your pocket but do want all your essentials to hand, this is where the Ultimate bar bag (£70) comes in. Ideal for absolute necessities like money, phone and passport, the 8.5L pack also has room for a windproof or waterproof and a compact camera.
The bag is fully waterproof, has an internal zipped pocket, carrying strap and a lockable Rixen and Kaul fixing system. Accessories include a map case and GPS cover. The only downside is the price.
