Designed exclusively for the iPhone 5, 5S and 5C, Optrix’s case and app will turn your phone into an action camera.
The XD5 casing is waterproof up to a claimed 10.1m (33ft), shock rated to 9.1m (30ft) and has a 175-degree wide-angle lens. The chest mount fits well. There’s a helmet attachment too, but we’d be reluctant to use it due to the phone’s size. Other lens and mounting options are available.
The included app freezes the iPhone’s autofocus for clean footage, but £6.99 buys you the upgraded Video Pro version, which offers onscreen telemetry using GPS. It records your current, average and max speed, altitude and riding time, and plots your route, enabling you to view lap times. This info can then be overlaid as you replay the video, providing a fun way of showing your friends your ride in more detail.
The footage is incredible considering it’s from a phone, and it’s surprisingly good in low light too. If having a GoPro appeals but you can’t justify the cost, this is a blinding solution and the GPS features are the icing on the cake.
