If you like your lighting techy, Niterider’s Lumina OLED 1100 packs a powerful lighting punch with excellent run-time communication and easy control.
The rubber-strap-secured plastic bar-mount comes with ‘L’ spacers for various round bars, but will also work with flatter aero bars by sitting on the curved front edges. The mount also twists round so the light can sit on a stem (although that doesn’t look particularly neat).
However you choose to mount, the thick double back-strap is always secure, with no excessive wobble or movement, even if you decide to head down some steps or your local version of the Arenberg trench. Once the bar mount is in place, a quick-release latch means the actual light is easy to slide on and off too.
It’s well configured for speed and more challenging rides in an optical sense too. That’s because the single Cree LED gives a clear, long-reaching beam for picking out detail and debris at a fair distance. There’s enough side spread for confident corner judging and a sense of overall ride context too.
Five different constant modes give a range of outputs to suit different speeds and lengths of ride. There’s little obvious difference in use between 1100 lumen ‘Boost’ and 900 lumen ‘high’ though, so we left it in the latter. That usefully extends run times that are already longer than Niterider’s claims.
Remaining life and current mode are displayed clearly on the OLED top panel. Mode/data navigation via two-way buttons is easy and intuitive most of the time too, although the flush, soft-touch actuation isn’t ideal for numb fingers in fat gloves.
If you’re not fussed with the high-tech display, there’s a non-OLED version with a conventional single colour-change battery/mode indicator button for £110. A helmet mount and versatile GoPro/belt clip/magnetic mount ‘photo pack’ are available as extras, too.
All in all, the Lumina 1100 is a tough, durable and practical light (whether you want the techy display or not), and there are 900, 750 and 550 lumen members of the Lumina family that share the same features and mount too.
