Only Light & Motion wrap their own reflector around a Welch Allyn HID bulb, rather than using the complete head unit. The result is a far-reaching central spot and a wide but dim halo which L&M say reduces contrast and eye fatigue. That might be true, but the beam is still too narrow for tight, twisty single-track, although it works well with the supplied helmet mount and on open trails or road. Run times are reasonable and a slightly lower power setting gives a short extension. Weatherproofing is excellent throughout and other fixtures are simple but effective.
The weightier, bulkier NiMH battery option tested here is the cheapest of the family, while the 200g lighter Li-Ion battery is £425 for the same run times.
