The Muc-Off Tool Bottle is a 450ml plastic bottle with a flat screw top, designed for accommodating a selection of tools and other small items. It's said to be fully waterproof and fit into any standard-size bottle cage.
Intended to be easy to clean after muddy bike rides and suitable for all cycling disciplines, it's claimed to be a perfect storage solution for long rides.
The bottle measures 137x75mm and weighs 62g empty. It's priced at £13 / $12 / €16.
Muc-Off Tool Bottle performance
Fitting into any standard bottle cage and taking up the same space as a 450ml water bottle, this simple design from Muc-Off is ideal for small frames with limited clearance around the rear shock or inside the front triangle.
Despite its rather diminutive size, I was surprised how much it could hold.
I managed to stuff in a lightweight TPU inner tube, multi-tool, puncture repair kit, first-aid equipment, CO2 canisters and some emergency snacks.
The bottle is a good solution for riding in the winter because it's fully waterproof, easy to clean and has – so far – proved durable.
Without internal dividers, the bottle's contents are free to rattle around, which can be distracting when riding.
Muc-Off offers a neoprene insert designed to address this issue, but it comes at an additional cost of £5.50. I didn’t test this, so can’t say whether it works.
It can also be challenging to locate specific items, often necessitating the emptying of the entire contents to find what you're looking for.
Furthermore, it occupies valuable bottle cage space, meaning you need to compromise on hydration to accommodate it. This means it may not be suitable for those with only one bottle cage mount or for long rides.
On-frame tool storage | How we tested
We tested these on-bike tool-storage solutions in a plethora of conditions, ranging from hot and dusty days to torrential rain and sloppy trails.
They were tested out on the trail in all conditions and ridden on different terrain to test their stability and suitability for different disciplines of mountain biking.
Where tools were included, they were tested trail-side, with the exception of tubeless-repair equipment and chain breakers, which were tested in the workshop.
Tool-storage solutions on test
- Topeak Ninja Master+ Free Strappack
- Muc-Off Tool Bottle
- OneUp Components 70cc EDC Pump Kit
- Granite Quiver Tool Roll
- Top Tube Bag
- Crankbrothers TT17 Twin Tube Tool Kit
Muc-Off Tool Bottle bottom line
The Muc-Off Tool Bottle is a good-value option to keep items off you and on your bike, plus it won’t break the bank, and will keep your items secure and dry.
I found it perfect for short or mid-length rides, where you want to take some items but don’t mind sacrificing space for water bottles.
It is basic, but it does what it's designed for well. However, I would like to see the neoprene insert included in the price to help cure the rattling.
