Our review
A cleverly thought-out, well-made solution for storing the maximum number of bikes in the minimum possible space

Pros:

Bikes take up half the room they would on wall hooks; high-quality construction; can ‘grow’ with your bike collection

Cons:

More expensive than more basic alternatives

The Stashed SpaceRail is an ingenious method of cramming lots of bikes into a small space.

Designed in Wales by keen mountain bike rider Elliot Tanner and manufactured in the UK, this sturdy ceiling-mounted storage system suspends bikes from wheel hooks.

These can be spun around, spaced out and slid along the extruded 6063-T6 aluminium rail to find the best fit.

Stashed SpaceRail spec details

Stashed says the SpaceRail reduces the space used to store bikes by 50 per cent.

By alternating which way your bikes face, you can avoid any clash of frames, pedals or handlebars, and pack bikes of varying shapes and sizes surprisingly close together.

Prices start at £160 for the single-bike setup and rise to £1,650 for the 24-bike system.

The SpaceRail comes with a two-year, 'no quibble' warranty, even for commercial use.

On my setup, six bikes (two kids' bikes, a 26in-wheeled hardtail, a 29er hardtail, a hybrid and a road bike) take up just 1,115mm, wheel to wheel.

As well as enabling you to fit more bikes into a given area, this also potentially means fewer bike locks or a shorter chain are required to secure them.

The hooks glide smoothly along the rail, but there’s enough friction to prevent them from moving too quickly, which could cause bikes to bump into one another.

A clever spring-loaded mechanism stops them from rotating when you’re trying to insert a wheel.

In addition to the length of rail needed to store the bikes, you require some ‘excess’, to give enough room to separate the bikes and spin them around – something to bear in mind when buying.

Also, heavier electric bikes can be difficult to lift onto the hooks, which, being-ceiling mounted, will generally end up being higher than wall-mounted equivalents.

Stashed does now offer wall brackets and angled mounts for the SpaceRail, though, if that’s likely to be an issue for you.

Stashed SpaceRail setup information

Clear guides on the Stashed website make it easy to work out the best setup for your space and fitting is simple for anyone with basic DIY skills.

All that's required is some careful measuring and the drilling of pilot holes for the four substantial screws that hold the rail in place.

Make sure to leave plenty of space behind the rail so you can swing the bikes round. Stashed advises 600 to 700mm, so I went with 650mm initially, which wasn’t quite enough for bigger 29ers.

Each 1,200mm rail holds up to four bikes (£159.99 with one hook; extra hooks £40 to £50 each). You can connect several rails together if you have the space, enabling you to equip everything from a small bike shed to a busy workshop.

Custom lengths are available, at no additional cost.

The hooks are made from 304 stainless steel, with a polymer cover to protect the rim.

They fit tyres up to 3in wide (an adaptor is available for 4-5in fat-bike rubber) and can each support 30kg.

Stashed SpaceRail bottom line

With its quality finish and materials, there’s little to fault about the SpaceRail, making it one of the best bike storage options on the market.

Yes, it’s pricier than fitting multiple wall hooks, but it’s worth it for the space saved and ease of use.
