Great value waterproof panniers for first-time tourers

For truly waterproof bags, these laminated nylon panniers from Wiggle are a real steal. The seams are welded and the top of each bag rolls closed underneath the lid, so water is thoroughly shut out. A great value set, ideal for short tours and commuting.

The fabric is translucent and looks like it would tear easily. It doesn’t – although it isn’t as rugged as Ortlieb’s heavier-weight fabric or Carradice’s indestructible cotton duck.

The bags are left/right interchangeable, but they’re not huge: each has a 20 litre capacity.

There’s a U-shaped stiffener that prevents the contents poking fore and aft at odd angles, so heel clearance won’t be an issue unless your bike has short chainstays.

Inside there’s the usual back-plate, fronted by a zip and mesh pocket.

Hooks are by Rixen and Kaul, with four settings along the hook rail. The hooks have internal spacer washers to fit different rack diameters.

It works, but not as conveniently as Carradice’s ratchet hooks or Ortlieb’s neat lift-and-release hooks.

The panniers come with a carrying handle and detachable shoulder strap, as well as reflectives front and rear.

You don’t have to settle with orange either, as they also come in black.
