Great bladder, secure fit, but is a little light on internal organisational pockets

The Origin 5 is relatively basic in terms of number of features, but what it does, it does well. The main compartment is attached to Platypus’s BioCurve back panel, which didn’t feel particularly Bio or Curved, but it is roomy with a divided bladder space. A small zipped mesh pocket provides a home for a wallet or camera. Add two small waist pockets and you’re good to go.

The ergonomic shoulder straps work well, spreading load weight without creeping and with minimal need for the chest harness to be over tightened. A medium-sized external Lycra pouch pocket will hold a couple of tubes or a lightweight jacket and a couple of nylon loops would allow you to attach a bungee cord for extra compression or storage. Bag aside, it’s Platypus’s 2-litre Big Zip SL bladder that it’s most proud of. We can say that it’s up there with the best in terms of drip-free, high-volume delivery.
