Grand tours put bikes under enormous strain and, apart the riders themselves, it's the mechanics who are often the busiest guys on a team.
Only a couple of bikes are carried per rider, which means teams eat up prodigious amount of components in their attempts to keep bikes capable of handling the hurly burly of racing.
