Fashionistas rejoice, because Continental has announced a special-edition version of its much loved GP5000 tyre with tan coloured sidewalls.
Created to celebrate the rescheduled 2020 Tour de France, the Grand Prix 5000 Special Edition Tour de France 2020 tyre is the same as a standard GP5000 clincher tyre bar that tan wall, which will no doubt please a not insubstantial group of fashion-conscious road cyclists
The addition of tan sidewalls (or "cream", as Continental calls it) to its road racing tyres is something that Continental has, until now, steadfastly refused to offer, despite the enormous resurgence in popularity they have enjoyed in recent years.
Grand Prix 5000 Special Edition Tour de France 2020 specs
- Price: €69.90
- Type: Clincher
- Size: 700 x 25mm
- Weight (claimed): 255g per tyre
- TPI: 3/330
The range is currently limited to a single type and size of tyre – a standard 700 x 25mm clincher.
This means there are no other size options (23mm, 28mm or 30mm for example) or any tubeless-ready versions at launch.
The recent release of its Terra Speed gravel tyres with tan sidewalls suggests Continental no longer wishes to stand firm against the fashion tide, though.
Hopefully, then, Continental is just dipping its toe in the waters to see how warm it is. With any luck, we’ll see the full GP5000 clincher and tubeless range with this colour option – and hookless rim compatibility on the latter – added at some point soon.
Please, Continental, don't do a Schwalbe and make these limited-edition only. On behalf of cycling hipsters worldwide, we're begging you.
Priced at €69.90 (around £63 / $79), Continental says the Grand Prix 5000 Special Edition Tour de France 2020 tyre is available to buy in stores worldwide now.
