British Cycling and broadcasters Sky launched their latest series of family-oriented Sky Rides in London today, with help from Olympian Sir Chris Hoy and model/actress Kelly Brook.
A total of 12 free events will take place on traffic-free streets in 10 cities across the UK this summer. The aim is to encourage people of all ages and abilities to get on their bikes. Last year, 110,000 people took part.

- 22 August: Glasgow
- 29 August: Leicester
- 29 August: Bradford
- 31 August: Blackpool
- 5 September: Mayor of London’s Sky Ride, central London
- 12 September: Birmingham
Jeremy Darroch, Sky's chief executive, said: “After the fantastic response we had from the public last summer we want to make this year’s Sky Ride even bigger and better. Ultimately we’re aiming to get a million more people cycling regularly by 2013."
Participants will be able to ride alongside the likes of Sir Chris, Kelly, Victoria Pendleton and Bradley Wiggins. "I had a fantastic time at last year’s events in Glasgow and London, and it was great to see so many families enjoying all the activities and having fun," said Sir Chris.
"It's a fantastic initiative and cycling is a great way to stay in shape and keep healthy," said Kelly. "Since being involved last year I’ve enjoyed getting out and about on my bike more and I can’t wait to take part in the London event again this September.”
A series of Sky Ride Local events will also be taking place across the country. Leaders from British Cycling will guide small groups on routes for all abilities. More experienced cyclists will be catered for with the Sky Ride Etape Hibernia, which will takes entrants on an 80-mile trip through County Clare, Ireland on 22 August.
Young people are being encouraged to get on their bikes through British Cycling’s Go Ride initiative and race series, and also through Sky Ride School, a series of led rides planned for the summer.
