Shimano has updated its RX8 footwear, with the refreshed RX801 said to offer a more breathable design and refined fit, while the new RX8R features a knitted ankle cuff to keep gravel beneath your tyres, not in your shoes.
The original RX8 arrived in 2019 as Shimano’s dedicated, performance-focussed gravel shoe (in fact, it's one of the best gravel shoes we've tested), borrowing features from the Japanese brand’s cross-country mountain bike footwear in a stripped-back, lightweight design.
The second-generation RX8 follows the launch of the more affordable RX6 in July and builds on the popularity of the original design, with the RX8R thrown in the mix as a wildcard.
Improved breathability, refined fit for RX801
It’s evolution, rather than revolution, as far as the new RX801 is concerned.
First up, Shimano claims the perforated upper offers improved ventilation over the original shoe.
As for the fit, Shimano has reworked the toe box to offer a wider, roomier shape. Shimano is now also offering the RX801 in additional half sizes from 39.5 to 47.5.
Otherwise, the RX801 switches to the new, low-profile Boa Li2 dial.
That aside, the updated shoe retains its carbon sole, relatively minimalist tread pattern and two-bolt SPD cleat compatibility.

New RX8R gets integrated cuff for rowdy gravel riding
The RX8R – short for RX8 Rally – is a completely new model, taking the RX801 and adding a knitted ankle cuff that “boosts protection from sand, grit, and pebbles”, according to Shimano.
Think of it as an integrated gaiter, eliminating the space between the foot and the shoe, Shimano says.
It’s similar to the high cuff (often made from neoprene) seen on some of the best winter cycling shoes, although the RX8R is aimed at mixed-terrain riding, rather than being designed specifically for the cold, wet rides of winter.
“The RX8 Rally concept was inspired by my favourite local ride called the Trabuco Creek Trail, which is jam-packed with jungle-cross singletrack, multiple creek crossings, and so much sand,” says Jessie Gascon, Shimano’s soft goods product manager.
Otherwise, the RX8R shares its design with the RX801, down to the fit, carbon sole and Boa dial, supported by a velcro strap across the toe box.
