Schwalbe has updated its top-of-the-range gravel race tyres and added a new model – the G-One RX Pro – to the set.

The G-One RX Pro features a new tread pattern for rockier and muddier conditions, while the G-One R and G-One RS tyres have been superseded by the G-One R Pro and G-One RS Pro, respectively.

All three tyres get a new construction, which is said to offer increased puncture protection, while reducing rolling resistance by 10 per cent compared to the previous G-One tyres.

The tyres are available from today, in black and tan sidewall colourways, costing €74.90 / $83.39 (UK prices are TBC).

Schwalbe says the new G-One RX Pro tyre “completes” the G-One tyre line-up, offering the most aggressive tread pattern of the range.

Central boomerang-shaped elements are designed to offer low rolling resistance, with long teardrop-profiled intermediate knobs are claimed to improve structural support under load.

The outer pattern alternates between longitudinal and curved blocks, which are said to improve grip and stability when cornering quickly on challenging terrain.

Tread depth is claimed to sit between the brand’s G-One Bite and Ultrabite tyres (which remain as a mid-tier offering), while they’re widely spaced to improve mud-shedding.

Rolled out across the range

Under the skin, a new Race Pro construction has been developed to lower rolling resistance and improve ride comfort, while fortifying puncture resistance.

This replaces the Super Race construction, as used by the G-One R and G-One RS, with the replacement G-One R Pro and G-One RS Pro tyres also using the new construction.

The carcass continues to feature a 67 threads-per-inch casing and three-layer sidewalls, but has been widened, along with the V-Guard vectran puncture protection belt (this is now 25mm wide in a size 700x40c, up from 20mm).

This extension means the belt overlaps the carcass, which Schwalbe claims contributes to lower rolling resistance compared to the Super Race design (which saw a gap between the belt and carcass overlap).

Schwalbe’s drop-bar product manager, Jakob Maßen, says the brand was surprised to find more material proved to be more efficient in testing, but says small material savings elsewhere work to counteract the additional weight.

The Addix Race compound has also been tweaked – Schwalbe claims a new formula results in a 10 per cent reduction in rolling resistance when combined with the construction changes, and improved grip on the shoulders.

The new tyres also see the introduction of black-sidewall options (previously, the G-One R and G-One RS tyres were only available with tan sidewalls), and a new 700x50c size across the range.

Schwalbe says every tyre is ETRTO-compliant and can be used with hookless rims (also adhering to these standards).

It says it exceeds industry standards in reliability testing, subjecting its gravel tyres to its internal standard of 1.6x maximum stated pressure for one hour, instead of the established 1.1x maximum pressure for 10 minutes.

In line with ETRTO standards, Schwalbe’s ‘TLE’ (Tubeless Easy) nomenclature is being phased out and replaced by ‘TLR’ (Tubeless Ready).

Schwalbe says each tyre is created using recovered Carbon Black (as opposed to virgin Carbon Black – a key component of tyre rubber), which results in an 80 per cent reduction in carbon dioxide emissions for that component.
