A town in North-East England is hosting a unique Bike Swap day where children can replace bikes they have outgrown with ones that fit.
The event in Ashington, Northumberland has been scheduled for Saturday 5 December so parents can pick up new bikes in time for Christmas.
The idea is that in return for handing over an old bike, people can take their pick from a pool of second-hand machines which have either been donated by other parents or are stolen bikes recovered by the police that have not been claimed.
The event at the Hirst Welfare Centre in Alexandra Road has been set up by Active in Ashington through sustainable transport charity Sustrans. Project officer, and resident Sustrans bike mechanic, Adam Bell will be on hand to give advice on bike fitting.
Any bikes left over after the event will be available to residents on long-term loan. Applications will be accepted at an event on 20 December.
Active in Ashington launched in 2007 and is based at Hirst Welfare Centre. Bikes for children and adults are maintained there by mechanics trained up as part of the project. Staff and volunteers lead guided walks and cycle rides throughout the Wansbeck area. For more information call Mark Curr on 01670 524 063.
