British Cycling has thrown its weight behind plans by Torbay Council for an outdoor velodrome and closed road circuit in the area.
The governing identified the South West as a part of England in "desperate" need of the facilities, with cyclists in Devon and Cornwall currently having to travel to Newport, Bournemouth and London to get access. Neither the size of track or exact location within Torbay has been confirmed.
While formal drawings have yet to be drawn up, the news that British Cycling will provide funding assistance is good news for cyclists in the area. This funding is earmarked to come from Sport England's 2013-2017 Whole Sport Plan, a long-term, sport-specific plan that shows how a particular governing body intends to grow their sport at all levels of competition.
Both British Cycling and the council hope the project will become a reality as soon as possible after the Olympic Games.
"The South West region has always had a strong cycling tradition, and has produced many riders who have progressed to the highest levels of international racing, and it is vital to provide safe traffic free facilities so that this tradition can continue," said Dave Cockram, British Cycling’s National Facilities Officer.
