SRAM today announced a new version of its Powerdome X road cassette, this one created specifically for cyclocross. The new X-Glide (XG) 1090 Cyclocross Cassette features numerous open areas throughout the structure, leaving exits route for mud, snow and other grit that can get packed in between cogs during sloppy races.
The X-Glide (XG) 1090 Cyclocross Cassette comes with 12-27t gearing. Made of steel and aluminum, the 10-speed cassette weighs a claimed 159g. It will be available in December for €300/$335.
The open design comes from additional milling between the gear steps, SRAM said, as well as a more open backing plate.
While most road cassettes start with an 11-tooth cog, SRAM said its pro riders requested the 12-27.
“I love it, not only because its light, but the gear ratios are better,” said Katie Compton, an 8-time US national cyclocross champion and SRAM-sponsored athlete. “The jump from one cog to the next is smaller so I never feel like I’m in too big or too small of a gear. Plus the open design will be perfect for Belgian mud.”
Racing on the new cassette, Compton just scored a second place at the opening World Cup in Tabor, Czech Republic.
