Introduced in 1986, Mavic’s Open Pro rim established itself as the quintessential box section alloy rim for training as well as racing. Times have changed and as road rims get wider and disc brakes take over, Mavic is attempting to keep pace, with three updated versions of the Open Pro.
Starting this summer, the Open Pro will be available in two rim brake and one disc-specific version.
All three Open Pro models have an internal width of 19mm, which is 4mm wider than the previous version. They are also tubeless compatible. According to Mavic all three variants weight in at 420g.
Rim brake riders can choose from an Open Pro with a machined brake track as well as a version with Mavic’s Exalith surface treatment that provides a more durable, grooved braking surface. Exalith requires special brake pads, which will be included with the rims.
Both of these rim brake versions will be offered in 24, 28 and 32-hole drillings.
The disc-specific Open Pro does away with the brake track and uses an asymmetric drilling to balance spoken tension. It will be available in 28 and 32-hole drillings.
No word on US, UK or Australian pricing yet. We also don’t know if Mavic will offer the Open Pro in a 650b version, but given the growth of this market, it’s not out of the question.
