While perusing the halls of Core Bike 2018, this little retro treat caught our eye. Created to celebrate Lake’s 35th anniversary — and joining the ranks with an increasing number of laced cycling shoes — is the throwback-styled MX1 and CX1.
Harking back to an original design launched at the beginning of the company, these shoes have been updated with modern materials and technology.
Despite the throwback looks, we can’t help but think they look a little like bowling shoes.
Both shoes feature PU coated and perforated Action Leather uppers, with the road models designed around a tighter last than the equivalent off-road oriented versions.
The lace closure should let you tailor the fit nicely, though we find it does limit ‘on-the-go’ adjustability. A carbon soled version is available too.
The road CX1 features a reinforced nylon sole, while the carbon CX1 version uses Lake’s own Race Carbon Fiber sole. The MX1 and MX1 Carbon add rubber lugs for extra grip.
Prices are the same across both series. The basic model is a relatively reasonable $134.99, while the carbon model retails at $199.99. The shoes are available in a wide fit as well, and there's a range of sizes from 37–50.
While they’re not listed as such, these shoes are also available through the Lake custom colour program.
We’re keen to get some of these in for testing and think they might just bowl us over.
