Sometimes, knowing the end of a story doesn’t make it any less enjoyable. And that’s certainly the case with the new feature-length documentary about Lachlan Morton’s Around Australia Record attempt, The Great Southern Journey.

Last September, Morton set a new record for riding 14,200km around his home country in 30 days, nine hours and 59 minutes.

The month-long ride saw Morton cover more than 450km a day and beat the previous record by more than a week.

Presented by POC and Cannondale, The Great Southern Journey is now on the EF Pro Cycling YouTube channel and provides a glimpse into what it’s like to undertake an ultra-endurance ride

Morton is no stranger to Odyssean bike rides, having completed his Alt Tour where he rode the entire 2021 Tour de France route solo, tackled the Tour Divide in 2023 and competed in many self-supported, ultra-distance races.

The 33-year-old is no stranger to the camera, either. Many of his adventures over the past decade have been turned into films.

Morton’s 2014 film Thereabouts saw the pro cyclist joined by his brother Gus as they cycled to Uluru in the Australian outback.

Gus Morton, a former pro cyclist himself, was also involved in The Great Southern Journey, filming the pre-dawn starts and thousands of kilometres or riding.

During his record attempt, Lachlan Morton raised more than AU$140,000 for the Indigenous Literary Foundation to provide books and learning resources to Indigenous children in remote communities across Australia.
