Kryptonite says its New York Diamond Standard bike lock takes 10 angle grinder discs to be cut, which should make it a safe bet against thieves.

This is Kryptonite’s first angle-grinder resistant lock. Arguably, this makes Kryptonite late to the party, with brands such as Litelok and Abus having already released locks that can resist these power tools.

But speaking to BikeRadar at the iceBike* trade show, Kryptonite’s senior marketing specialist Jon Maisley said: “We sacrificed being first to the market to be the best on the market.”

To resist angle grinders, the new bike lock has a four-layer construction. At the centre of the U-lock is a 26mm steel shackle, which is coated in an angle-grinder resistant diamond coating. This is then covered in a steel layer and finished with a rubberised TPE cover.

Maisley says the Kryptonite New York Diamond Standard also has a diamond-coated crossbar to resist angle grinder attacks to its locking section.

It also features a double-deadbolt design, which means it can’t be twisted open if a thief cuts through one side of the shackle. So, anyone attacking this lock will have to make two cuts to remove it.

Kryptonite has rated the £269.99 lock 10/10 on its own security scale. For context, the popular Kryptonite New York Standard scores 9/10, while the Kryptonite Evolution Mini scores 7/10.

Kryptonite backs this score up with five years' free anti-theft protection, plus a lifetime warranty.

Like most of the brand’s other locks, the New York Diamond Standard is supported by Kryptonite’s key safe programme. This means you can receive a one-time pair of spare keys for free at any point during the lock’s lifetime.

Approved for electric bikes, the lock weighs 2.3kg.

At the other end of the safety spectrum, Kryptonite has released the Click Lock, which works like a cable tie to “keep the honest man honest”, in the words of Maisley.

Suitable for locking accessories such as a helmet to your bike, or for locking your bike during a cafe stop, the lock has a 10mm internal steel core and is 45cm long.

It closes with a resettable three-digit code.

The Click Lock costs £14.99 / $14.99 / €14.99.
