Giant Bicycles have donated 1,000 mountain bikes to emergency crews involved with the Japanese earthquake disaster. The 'Special Edition Quake Reconstruction' models are based on the Rock hardtail sold in Japan.
Each bike comes with a bright yellow paint job for improved visibility, a rear rack and a front light. They'll be used by local emergency organisations and volunteers to navigate rough terrain and damaged roads no longer accessible by motor vehicles.
When the earthquake hit, Giant altered their schedules to allow production of the bikes. They'll be delivered to affected areas by the end of the month. Andrew Juskaitis, global product marketing manager at Giant, told BikeRadar: "Everyone at Giant wishes the people of Japan the very best in this most trying time. We offer our assistance in the form of these 1,000 bicycles.
"Hopefully they'll be able to provide much-needed access to those who've been left inaccessible by motorized means. With conditions as dire as they are, we hope this small token will help provide much-needed transportation of care-givers and essential goods to those left in need.”
