For 2017 Scott revamped its dual suspension Spark, which on its debut under Nino Schurter scored a world championship and later Olympic Gold in Rio — not bad for a new bike.
Now, using the new Spark as a template, Scott has lifted the veil on the E-Spark Plus; a pedal assist e-MTB with 25.7+ wheels and tires, 130mm front and 120mm rear suspension with Scott's Twinlock system, an alloy frame and dropper post. It's one of the best-looking e-MTB’s I’ve seen so far.

Scott's new E-Spark Plus
Opting for the Shimano STEPS E-8000 system, the E-Spark Plus is claimed to have up to 100km of range and a max speed of 25kph / 15mph.
Scott has also created integrated covers for the STEPS motor, complete with skid plates as well as cooling channels to not only protect the unit but clean up the aesthetic too.
Scott has fabricated a similar housing on the down tube for the battery that not only secures it to prevent rattles but also protects the pack from the elements.
The battery itself is secured to the frame with an Abus lock that allows it to be removed from the bike for charging and sees mounts for a bottle cage.
Following along from the designs of the Olympic-winning Spark, Scott has updated the suspension kinematics with a single pivot rocker design, which the brand says allows for suspension characteristics that weren’t possible with the previous E-Spark.
Fewer pivots not only mean less maintenance, but Scott also says the Trunnion shock mount allows for a longer stroke for the same eye to eye length, a stiffer and lighter linkage, and a claimed lower centre of gravity.
The new E-Spark Plus also receives Scott’s Twinloc suspension system, which toggles the front and rear shocks' travel with a single lever from the bars into one of three ride settings (Descend, Traction and Lockout) depending on the terrain ahead.
Based around 27.5 plus wheels and tires, the E-Spark also sees Boost hub spacing. The additional tire width makes a larger footprint for extra traction and dampening, while the wider hubs enable stiffer wheels and a straighter chain line at either end of the cassette.
According to Scott, the main goal in developing the E-Spark was to reduce the impact of the engine on ride feel. Compared to the old Spark the head tube is almost 1.5 degrees slacker for added stability especially riding on steep terrain.
Chainstay length has also been decreased, from 488mm to 448mm on the E Spark Plus — only 10mm longer than the standard non-assisted model.
On top of these changes, Scott is also adding an XL size option to better fit the taller riders among us.
Scott is offering four versions of the E-Spark, three men's and one women's specific Contessa version. The Contessa version comes in three sizes and sees a women's specific saddle and slightly narrower handlebars.
