Raleigh UK has teamed up with Re-Cycle, a British charity committed to providing simple and affordable transport to developing countries.
In Britain, millions of bikes are thrown away or lie unused in sheds, whilst many people in Africa have no access to transport of any kind. Walking to school, work or simply to collect water can take up-to four hours per day - a burden that can take a huge toll on communities by hampering work and education opportunities.
A bicycle, however, can cut travel time to a fraction, and in Africa they are often used for passenger and load-carrying duties. Bikes give families the extra time to earn, learn and enjoy life. So far Re-Cycle has sent over 26,000 bikes to Africa, with Raleigh’s involvement the charity aims to increase this figure significantly.
Derek Balcombe from Re-Cycle said: “We are delighted to be teaming up with such a household name as Raleigh, their contribution of bikes being sent to Africa will literally change lives.”
This new scheme was originally trialed in Raleigh’s own eight Cyclelife stores it has been so successful with many lorry loads being sent already that we are now making it available to all Cyclelife and Raleigh retailers in time for National Bike Week which starts on June 14.
Raleigh’s aim is to encourage more consumers to enjoy the freedom and health benefits of riding their bikes, whilst also supporting a fantastic cause. As an incentive to customers re-cycling their bike for a new Raleigh or Diamondback model, participating retailers will offer up to £30 off the recommended retail price.
