For the first three stages of the 2014 Tour de France, Mark Cavendish will be saluting wounded troops with a special edition Specialized Evade helmet that celebrates the charity Help for Heroes. The aero road helmet was designed in the Help for Heroes tri-service colours to represent the Army, Navy and Royal Air Force.
The Tour de France route will pass nearby the Help for Heroes Phoenix House Recovery Centre in Catterick where wounded service members are cared for.
“It was inspiring to see so many servicemen, women and veterans completing bike rides as part of Hero Ride 2014 in spite of life-changing injuries and illnesses," Cavendish said in a press release. "I wanted to represent them on the Tour de France and this bespoke helmet designed by Specialized will hopefully help to raise awareness of the amazing work Help for Heroes does in supporting our wounded troops."
Cavendish's wife Peta has been a patron of Help for Heroes since the charity started seven years ago, and both have participated in a number of fundraisers for it.
After the Tour, the special edition Evade Cav is wearing during the race will be put up for auction at a Help for Heroes dinner in September.
