Battery damage poses a potential fire risk

Owners of Canyon's Spectral:ON CF and CFR, and Torque:ON CF electric mountain bikes should stop using their bikes and batteries immediately.

Canyon has instructed owners not to charge or discharge the batteries, citing that damage to the battery casing/housing could cause a fire hazard.

Potential water ingress – caused by that damage – could short-circuit and bypass the battery's fail-safe protection mechanisms.

Although the fire risk is "extremely unlikely", it cannot be ruled out, says Canyon.

Owners should remove their battery from the bike and inspect its casing/housing for any damage, outlined on a dedicated support page on Canyon's website.

The affected battery model numbers are:

  • BT0001
  • BT0002
  • BT0003
  • BT0004

Canyon goes on to confirm none of its other electric mountain bikes have been affected, including the Spectral:ONFly

Affected owners can expect email updates, but should also check the dedicated support page linked above.

If you've sold your Spectral:ON CF or CFR or Torque:ON CF to someone else, Canyon is requesting you try to contact the new owner to make them aware of the stop ride notice and potential fire risk.

Whether owners will get free replacement batteries remains to be seen.

Once the brand has "[worked] out the best solution for [its] customers" it will be in touch.

In a statement released exclusively to BikeRadar, Canyon said: "We would like to apologise most sincerely to our affected customers. We can imagine how difficult this must be for our passionate bike fans. Our aim is to get them back on their bikes as quickly as possible."
