The ‘Gwingate’ saga continues to rumble on, with World Cup champ Aaron Gwin posting a public statement on his blog insisting that he didn’t break any contract with Trek World Racing in order to join Specialized’s downhill team for 2013.
“Reports that I broke my contract with 23 Degrees/Trek World Racing are false,” says the US racer. “My contract expired. The one-page letter of intent I signed said there would be a ‘full length contract’ with ‘precise terms’ coming in the future. The 16-page contract that showed up in late November wasn’t signed by me because it wasn’t the deal we’d made. I’ve moved onto a team that gave me the contract I wanted, and these are the facts.”
Gwin says his lawyers have warned him not to say anything more but that he always gave Trek 100%. He adds that he loves his new bike and is “more excited to race this year than I ever have been”, and ends by thanking all the fans who’ve stood behind him. You can read the full statement on Aaron’s blog.
There’s no response from Trek World Racing yet, though they did pull a video from YouTube that showed Gwin signing the letter of intent. You can read their original press release about his departure here.
Troy Lee
In other Gwin news, Aaron has revealed he’ll be rocking Troy Lee Designs clothing “this season and beyond”, describing the company as “a dream sponsor of mine”.
