The Colorado High School Cycling League will host their second annual CycleFest fundraiser the weekend of 14-15, May. The event includes dinner and a silent auction on Saturday followed by a morning group ride and lunch on Sunday.
The Saturday dinner at Palette’s Restaurant in the Denver Art Museum features Gary Fisher as a guest speaker and provides opportunity for attendees to rub elbows with industry icons. The following morning Fisher will be in Boulder to host a bike ride and lunch at Bacaro Venetian Tavern.
Fisher met Kate Rau, executive director of the Colorado High School League, while visiting Boulder in 2008. “I asked Gary how to start a high school league similar to NorCal,” said Rau. “He responded with enthusiastic conviction that I needed to watch Children of the Dirt. He sent me the movie and within 2 years we held our first race series.”
Other industry advocates and personalities can be expected to attend the event. Last year’s CycleFest was attended by Slipstream Sports CEO, Jonathan Vaughters; Greg Herbold from SRAM; Travis Brown from Trek; Dave Weins and Susan DeMattei as well as Colorado State Senator Chris Romer, among others.
The inaugural 2010 CycleFest dinner sold out with many regional and national bike celebrities in attendance and raised US$25,000 to launch and support the race series, coach training, and associated infrastructure. According to Rau, the 2011 CyleFest fundraising target is $30,000.
Fall 2010 marked the first Colorado League season and comprised of a four race series that drew close to 200 high school athlete participants.
