The second Help for Heroes Hero Ride – in which 2,000 cyclists will parade on the Mall in London to raise cash for injured servicemen – has entered the final countdown for registration.
The Hero Ride – a collection of official rides and self-organised events – aims to raise £1.5m for the charity, which supports British service personnel wounded and traumatised in recent conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan.
This week is the last chance for cyclists to join one of five official rides that will all meet up in London on 8 June for the 2,000 strong Hero Ride in the Mall. Official routes include Edinburgh-London, Manchester-London and the popular through-the-night Dawn Raid from the Help for Heroes recovery centre at Tedworth in Wiltshire.
All the rides will rendezvous at Blackheath and ride the final 10 miles to central London to gether, supported by charity patrons such as sprinter Mark Cavendish and his wife Peta.
Omega-Pharma-QuickStep rider Cavendish, said: “The Hero Ride is an amazing opportunity to cycle alongside our wounded men and women and to hear their inspirational stories.
“I’ve seen how Help for Heroes supports them and their families and, in 2014, that support is going to be more important than ever. I’d urge anyone who has ever thought about doing something life-changing or challenging to do their bit and sign up to the Hero Ride 2014. I hope to join the ride myself and my wife Peta will be taking part in her third ride for Help for Heroes. We’ll both be cheering you along the way!”
Last year, the inaugural Hero ride raised more than £1m and brought 1,300 riders to the Mall.
