Hookless rims are fairly new in road cycling, but what are they and where have they come from?

They’ve also proved fairly controversial because without a fully recognised standard measurement for hookless and, in the wider sense, road tubeless, many rim and tyre manufacturers are stating only limited compatibility between brands.
