Out of the bag, these downhill-inspired shorts look bulky, with their hefty 330 denier outer, waterproof zips and rubberised logos.
But the smooth hydrophobic mesh lining is comfortable, and they feel much lighter when you're riding cross-country. The 14in length is good and the cut is superb, with room to accommodate armour. The shape alone provided the perfect fit for this tester, but if you need to tweak it slightly, there are waist adjusters and belt loops. The 'slashes' across the front are a laser-cut vent system and on the first hot day of summer they worked well enough to keep us cool and happy. They don't come with a liner so pair them with your favourite padded layer.
