Our review
A good all-rounder with a cut best suited to taller riders

Pros:

Length of jacket sleeves; environmental standards

Cons:

Fit of under-helmet hood is a bit too baggy

Vaude's Moab Rain Jacket is designed for mountain biking and bike touring, and is made to strict environmental standards with bluesign certification.

Vaude Moab Rain Jacket details

Made using a 2.5-layer waterproof material, which has a PFC-free DWR finish, the Moab has additional ventilation from the long pit zips.

All the zips, including the two hand warner pockets at the front, have long length zip pulls and the zips themselves are water-repellent.

The hood fits underneath a helmet and handily rolls up when not in use, fastening with a loop and strap.

There's reflective detailing on the long back hem for additional visibility and the overall fit is longer through the body than most cycling jackets.

Vaude Moab Rain Jacket performance

If you have ever struggled with arm or seat coverage from a waterproof jacket, the Vaude Moab is one to consider because it is generously proportioned, with a dropped rear hem and long sleeves.

Its long sleeves are finished with a cuff that drops over the back of the hand for extra coverage, too.

The cut itself is more mountain bike casual than hardcore cross-country racer and there’s room to add a mid-layer without sacrificing ease of movement through the shoulders. That means it works off the bike too, and I’ve worn the jacket hiking as well as biking.

The 2.5-layer fabric rides light, but in common with many waterproof fabrics of this type it does have a slightly rubbery feel inside. Worn over a long-sleeve baselayer this wasn’t a problem, but in warm autumn weather where rain was accompanied by almost balmy 17-degree temperatures, it did get sticky when riding hard.

The only real niggle is the hood, which has a baggy fit. This means that as you move your head, the hood can contact your helmet, so you're aware it's there. On the plus side, it does roll up neatly when not in use.

Vaude’s products come with bluesign certification and meet a specific set of environmental and workers’ rights criteria. This means the fabric itself is made to strict environmental standards and Vaude's Green Shape label on the jacket is the brand's sign that the jacket is one of its "functional, environmentally friendly products made from sustainable materials."

Vaude Moab Rain Jacket bottom line

At a relatively budget-friendly price, the casual cut and mountain biking come hiking performance combo that the Moab offers makes it a solid choice as a multi-use waterproof jacket.
