Spiuk's Sec Seg shoe won the Peak Performer award in Triathlon Plus magazine's shoe group test in 2011 and these new shoes share a lot of the same features for less than half the price. The big difference underneath is that rather than a carbon fibre sole you get a polyamide glass fibre composite unit, which adds 140g per pair (total weight 698g).
The deep spine along the underside means you’re not losing much stiffness though and drain holes along its length and under the toes mean a breezy, fast-drying feel. The multi-bolt sole will work with standard Look-style three-bolt, two-bolt mountain-bike or Shimano’s old SPD R-style cleats. The insole is relatively flat and the upper isn’t thermally mouldable like its big brother, but a generous toe box means a better British foot fit than a lot of Mediterranean designed shoes.
It has a really wide opening for easy foot insertion and there’s a loop for latching it on to your stays with an elastic band. A big rubberised tab on the wrapover strap means easy gripping when wet and the split upper and lower tongue spreads pressure well with or without socks. Toe and heel reinforcement and easy-clean patent leatherette keep will keep them looking smart.
