Leyzne’s sleek-lined Super Drive XL has some tidy design features, but it’s ultimately short of lighting punch out on the trail.
The all-in-one design sits below the Mega Drive in Lezyne’s range, and creeps in a penny below the £100 mark as a solo pack. Riders after a more usable run time can buy the Loaded pack, which includes a spare battery in a neat alloy caddy, a helmet mount and a plastic carry case for £115.
It’s low on grams and well balanced for a secure fit on the quick-release bar mount. Charging is done via USB lead, so it’s worth investing in a proper USB charger plug as refuelling from your computer takes an absolute age.
Unfortunately, the good looks and neat design aren’t backed up by a similarly impressive performance. Despite a claimed 500-lumen output, the Super Drive is distinctly underpowered once you hit the darkness of the trail, to the point where we found ourselves repeatedly checking we were running full power – especially when doing the beam shots.
The mode button is also awkward to find easily while wearing winter gloves.
