3T’s latest production crankset has just arrived at the BikeRadar office. The Torno LTD is a full carbon, 1x specific crankset with an integrated carbon axle and aero spider paired with a range of custom Wolf Tooth chainrings.
In recent years, 3T has been no stranger to developing divisive aero-orientated products and the Torno crankset has been designed with its Strada and Exploro bikes in mind. The Torno LTD arrives after 3T acquired German lightweight specialists THM in 2016.
Three chainring options are available — 36, 40 and 44t — each coming from Wolf Tooth Components in the US and making use of its Drop-Stop technology, a tooth profile designed to help eliminate chain drop.
The Torno was designed specifically for road and gravel frames, requiring a wide range of compatibility — BB386EVO, BB30, press-fit 30, Shimano press-fit, BBright, Italian threads and Press Road BSA bottom brackets are all supported.
It’s fairly clear from just looking at the Torno that this is made with aero qualities in mind. The custom spider requires custom chainrings so you’re not just going to be able to bolt on your existing spare chainrings.
The Q-factor is also trim, at just 142mm wide — not quite Graeme Obree levels of slim, but with standard road Q-factors around the 145-150mm range, the Torno is certainly meant to keep your legs together.
3T say the Torno is the world’s second lightest crankset (the lightest being THM’s own Clavicula SE) with a claimed weight of 340g (without chainring). The weight limit for the Torno is said to be 120kg (264lbs), which is for rider, bicycle and baggage combined.
Availability
We’ve contacted 3T for availability details, but we suspect we’ll be seeing future complete builds of the Exploro and Strada to feature the Torno as standard.
The Torno LTD will retail for $1260 / €1049.
