More details have emerged of a new diamond-treaded Schwalbe tyre unveiled at the 2013 Tour de France, with the German manufacturers claiming it’s the fastest and most reliable road tyre they’ve produced.
The Schwalbe One uses a new compound, dubbed OneStar, developed for the tyre to give it an extremely low rolling resistance. Used on a Shimano C50 wheel with a slightly wider rim, the tyre follows the growing trend for teams to opt for 24mm and 25mm rubber on flat road stages. Whether a 23mm version is available is still to be confirmed. Pricing is to be announced.
The tubular version of the One is currently being used by RadioShack Leopard Trek, FDJ and Ag2r-La Mondiale, and has already found success under Jan Bakelants (RadioShack); he has held the yellow jersey since stage 2.
The tyre will be made at a purpose-built factory in Reichshof, Germany, and Schwalbe said a clincher version will be available from September 2013.
